Torah Va’Avodah
Torah Va’Avodah is the phrase coined by Shmuel Chayim
Landau (Shachal) which encapsulates the ideology of the Bnei Akiva movement.
These two words serve to highlight the deep synthesis that Bnei Akiva
strives for, but of course, they can’t capture the full richness or
complexity of the philosophy of life and Judaism to which they refer.
Since the phrase was coined, its exact meaning and significance has
been analyzed and debated, with people over the years suggesting different
explanations and nuances. As Hillel said of the single principle which
he felt encompassed the whole Torah—V’idach peirusha hu, zil gmor. The
rest is commentary- go and learn it!
